INFORMATION UPDATE

1. INTRODUCTION

The first Amateur Championship was held at Hoylake in 1885, where 44 players from 12 clubs contested a series of match play rounds. Today, The Amateur Championship, with 288 entrants, largely based on each entrant’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), is regarded as one of the most prestigious amateur golfing events in the world,

The winner of the 2019 Amateur Championship will receive an exemption to the 2019 Open Championship, the 2020 U.S. Open Championship, and by tradition, an invitation to the 2020 U.S. Masters.

The Amateur Championship has only ever been held outside of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on one occasion and that was 70 years ago, when Portmarnock Golf Club hosted the 1949 Amateur Championship, which was won by Irishman, Max McCready.  Other Irish winners of this prestigious event include:  Jimmy Bruen (1946), Joe Carr (1953, 1958 & 1960), Garth McGimpsey (1985), Michael Hoey (2001), Brian McElhinney (2005) and Alan Dunbar (2012).

There is a 19 strong Irish contingent participating the 2019 Amateur Championship.

2. TENTED VILLAGE   

The construction of The R&A tented village, to be located adjacent to the putting green and which will consist of a large score board complex, R&A offices, logistics support, a food operator and marquee, commenced on the 3rd June.

3. COMPETITORS

There are 288 competitors entered from across the globe.

Competitors are anticipated to arrive from Thursday, the 13th of June, or perhaps sooner in some cases.  There will be limited practice times for competitors on Thursday and Friday morning before the official practice days, being Saturday, the 15th and Sunday the 16th of June. A full schedule of play is included in the attached appendix.

Note:  In the event of delays during The Amateur Championship, Sunday, the 23rd of June is also reserved for play.

4. OFFICIAL PRACTICE DAYS

Saturday 15 June 8.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. 8.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.

Sunday 16 June 8.00 a.m. – 2.30 p.m. 8.00 a.m. – 2.30 p.m.

5. PRACTICE GROUND

For spectators wishing to view; The opening and closing times will be as follows;

Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 June 7.00am – 6.00pm

Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 June 6.00am – 7.00pm

Wednesday 19 June 6.00am – 7.00pm

Thursday 20 June 6.30am – 6.00pm

Friday 21 June 7.00am – 8.30am and 11.45am – 1.15pm

Saturday 22 June 7.00am – 8.30am and 12.00pm – 1.00pm

6. DRAW FOR QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Entries for The Amateur Championship closed on the 16th of May. The first stage of The Amateur Championship will be decided by stroke play over two rounds. 18 at The Island and 18 at Portmarnock, i.e 144 on each course each day. The draw for the stroke play can be viewed by visiting www.randa.org

7. QUALIFYING PLACES

The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes (plus ties) will compete in the knock-out matchplay stages of the event and the leading qualifiers will be seeded.

8. MATCH PLAY STAGES

On the morning of Wednesday, the 19th of June, there may a preliminary round of matchplay to reduce the 64 plus ties down to an even 64. Thereafter, on Wednesday, a further round will be played to reduce the field to 32 players by close of play.

Two rounds a day will then be played on Thursday and Friday, culminating in a 36 hole final on Saturday, the 22nd of June starting at 8.30am and 1pm

9. PRESENTATION

The prize presentation of The Amateur Trophy and Medals will take place immediately after play (approximately 5.00 p.m.) on Saturday, the 22nd of June.  Please note that Sky Sports will broadcast a highlights package on Tuesday, the 25th of June.

10. HOSPITALITY & CATERING

While there is free access and car parking during the Championship for spectators, the clubhouse will be limited to players, players guests, members and guests with passes.

The clubhouse will be open one hour before the start of play each day and up to one hour after the completion of play.  There will be an all-day food buffet serving breakfast and then lunch/dinner for players, guests, volunteers and Members in the downstairs Presidents Room. This may get scaled back to food by order later in the week.

There will be a marquee erected in the R&A tented village and adjacent to this, there will be a food kiosk that will serve a number of hot and cold options during the week. This is available to all in attendance

11. MEMBERS AND GUESTS CLUBHOUSE PASSES

Clubhouse access throughout the week will be limited to players, caddies, tournament officials, Members and their guests with passes.

12.  PLAYER DRESS CODE / MOBILE PHONE USE

For general information purposes:

• Competitors are asked to wear a good standard of dress at all times.  Headwear must not be worn in the clubhouse

• The wearing of clean soft spikes within the clubhouses is permitted

• With the exception of the locker room only mobile phones are permitted in the clubhouse but must be used respectfully and on silent at all times. Phone calls should be made out with public areas

13.  CAR PARKING/ DIRECTIONS

There will be AA sign posts in the vicinity of Portmarnock directing players and spectators to Portmarnock Golf Club.  There will be very limited car parking during the week in the main car park. However there will be ample car parking on the driveway to the club house.  Car Park attendants will oversee.

14. SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE

There will be a shuttle coach service to and from the local Dart Stations.  The timetable for the shuttle service is as follows:

The coach service will run on Wednesday and Thursday, the 19th and 20th of June from Portmarnock Station to Portmarnock Golf Club from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. (every 20 minutes).  On Friday and Saturday, the 21st and 22nd of June, the coach service will run from Portmarnock Station to Portmarnock Golf Club from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. and then from 12.00 p.m. to 1.00 p.m., (again, every 20 minutes).

The coach service will then run from Portmarnock Golf Club after lunch from Wednesday to Saturday back to the local Dart stations.

15. CONCLUSION

This promises to be a truly unique and historic occasion for our great Club. So please take time to attend during the week as it is an opportunity to watch great golf, enjoy the hospitality and also witness Portmarnock Golf Club and the Island Golf Club at the forefront of Amateur golf on the world stage.
